New Residents at the Visitor Center The Drava Story

Yesterday, on May 15, twelve new residents arrived at the Drava Story Visitor Center. A white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) was admitted to the center’s birds of prey rehabilitation facility. The eagle was transferred from the Zagreb Zoo, where it had been treated for an injury that prevents it from surviving independently in the wild. It will now live in the safe environment of the Visitor Center The Drava Story, where it will play an important educational role.

In addition to the eagle, 11 red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) were brought to the center for the reception of invasive alien species. The turtles were safely collected from Međimurje County thanks to the efforts of the Public Institution Međimurje Nature. As an invasive species, red-eared sliders pose a threat to native wildlife, making their removal from the wild essential for preserving biodiversity.

Thanks to the cooperation between institutions and the dedicated work of experts, the Drava Story continues to serve as an important site for biodiversity conservation, visitor education, and nature protection.
