TRC Project: Pilot Outdoor School Program Held – Natural and Cultural Heritage of Virovitica-Podravina County

From March 25 to 27, 2025, as part of the implementation of project activities by the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Parts of Nature and the Ecological Network of Virovitica Podravina County, and within the framework of the project Development of the Tourist and Recreational Center Jezero–Hercegovac–Ružica grad, KK.06.1.2.03.0002, acronym TRC, a three-day pilot field education program was held on the topic Natural and Cultural Heritage of Virovitica-Podravina County for students of the Department of Biology, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.

On the first day of the program, students attended a presentation on the TRC project and the activities of the Public Institution, followed by presentations on the Natural Heritage and Cultural Heritage of Virovitica-Podravina County. They also explored the exhibits of the Visitor center the Drava Story, guided by staff of the Public Institution. In the evening, the students, together with their professors, conducted a field session focused on zoological content, which included an introduction to methods for researching entomofauna and vertebrate fauna. On the second day, participants visited the Homeland Museum in Slatina, the Church of St. Joseph, and a giant sequoia tree. The fieldwork continued at the TRC project site near Orahovica Lake, with visits to Ružica grad, Lake Hercegovac, the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, and Mihalović Manor in Orahovica. The day concluded with field research on bat fauna using a bat detector, and the setting of live traps for newts and lizards. The field education program concluded with research on vertebrate fauna, collection of live traps, and a botany field session, which included the analysis of plant communities along an altitudinal gradient.
